EXERCISE: WRITING DIALOGUE

THE SCENARIO:

> A middle aged man returns home from work. he had stopped for a few drinks with his friends and forgot to phone his wife to tell her he’ll be late. The dinner is ruined

Wife:   *chucks dinner food into the dustbin*

Man:   What’s that? Did our neighbour gave us that tasteless food of theirs again?

Wife:   No, im sure they have better things to do. Like calling their wife to tell her he’s going to be late.

Man:   Late? Darling, I just had a few drinks with my colleagues. Remember that proposal with the German country I once told you about? It was accepted! God, like finally. They didn’t know how hard I busted my ass for the damn project.

Wife:   Do you have to curse after every drink??!?? And do you have to talk as if you are the only bastard busting your ass for your career?!?? Cause I’m at home Jeff! I clean! I cook! I ..*on the verge of breaking down* I do everything a maid does! And what do i get?!? NOTHING! Not even a dinner with my husband!

Man:   I’m… I didn’t know this dinner meant alot to you. *approaches wife*

Wife:   What do you know!??!?? All you care about is your damn career. You didn’t even attend Arthur’s graduation ceremony just now. I’ve had enough! *walks to the room and slams the door*

WIFE
Why are you back so late? I tried calling you, you know. I was so worried. I asked the little ones to check for me the traffic jam on the net. You know the one your sister was talking about the other day…. you look tired, alot of work is it?

HUSBAND
hmmmm…yea

WIFE
I cooked dinner. Your favourite sour chili fish.

HUSBAND
oh, u cooked?

WIFE 
You went somewhere right? Tell me, where did you go? 

HUSBAND
You know about the promotion? 

WIFE
Of course i know dear. Why, now alot of work ah?

HUSBAND
Yea. Something like that. Promoted equal more work equal more money.My boss wanted to treat me out for dinner. Then we got caught up with a jam on the way. I wanted to go home but we were so near to the restaurant. Sorry hun, my batt was low anyway. Couldn’t call you.

WIFE
You could borrow ur friend’s phone? Can you?

HUSBAND
oh yea. yea, of coz i could. it just… the treat, the whole promotion thing and the truckload of work to do. Sorry, it didn’t cross my mind.

WIFE
So what did you eat?

HUSBAND
Some thai food at imm. You know the boneless chicken, damn shiok. We should go there one day.

WIFE
You know I’m just so tired of all of this. I cook and you don’t eat. Maybe we should go out every single day. Like that, I don’t have to cook everyday.

HUSBAND
*sighs* …women ah
